it has been estimated that a thousand years ago there were less than 400 million people on earth。 today, however, the world's population has amounted to 5,000 million。 what is worse, it keeps growing at a surprising speed。 if this trend continues, the world's population will shoot up to 7,000 million by the year xx。 this is what we call population explosion。
the rapid development of science and technology is the main cause of population explosion。 we can see that the population has been growing at a tremendous speed since the industrial and agriculture revolution in 1650, which raised the people's standard of living, and the emergence of modern medicine in 1550, which lowered the people's death rate。
population explosion will result in a lot of such problems as food shortage, housing shortage and unemployment。 it is time that we acted quickly to carry out the policy of birth control otherwise, man's survival on the earth will be threatened。
It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it。 This is only true if you pursue it unwisely。 Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed。 So it is with happiness。 If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hang-over。 Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days。 His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous。 For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life。 But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness。
There are a great many people who have all the material conditions of happiness, i。e。 health and a sufficient income, and who, nevertheless, are profoundly unhappy。 In such cases it would seem as if the fault must lie with a wrong theory as to how to live。 In one sense, we may say that any theory as to how to live is wrong。 We imagine ourselves more different from the animals than we are。 Animals live on impulse, and are happy as long as external conditions are favorable。 If you have a cat it will enjoy life if it has food and warmth and opportunities for an occasional night on the tiles。 Your needs are more complex than those of your cat, but they still have their basis in instinct。 In civilized societies, especially in English-speaking societies, this is too apt to be forgotten。 People propose to themselves some one paramount objective, and restrain all impulses that do not minister to it。 A businessman may be so anxious to grow rich that to this end he sacrifices health and private affections。 When at last he has become rich, no pleasure remains to him except harrying other people by exhortations to imitate his noble example。 Many rich ladies, although nature has not endowed them with any spontaneous pleasure in literature or art, decide to be thought cultured, and spend boring hours learning the right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written to give delight, not to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism。
If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common。 The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence。 Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family。 Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them。 But there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure。 Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty。
It's harder and harder to be a student now。 We always have lots of things to study。 Sometimes we just can't stand it。 We are students, but we are human also。 We want some spare time to play and relax。 But now how can we do that with so many classes and so much homework? Yesterday, one of my classmates told me that he spent four hours in the night on his homework。 He couldn't go to sleep until midnight。 We have the same experience as he does。 The burden is too heavy for us。 We are too tired。 We can't even pay attention to what the teacher says in the class。
Two year ago, Chinese biggest TV Channel played an interview which brought great response to the audience. The interview is about a journalist asked a worker that if he felt happy, the worker didn’t react what the question is, he answered that he his name is not happy. The interview became hot, everyone was taking about it,“Are you happy” has become a greeting when people meet, they made fun of it. The reason why the interview becomes so popular is that people lack of sense of happiness today, they find a way to make fun of happiness. As the development of technology, people live in a fast-pace lifestyle, the pressure from work is so heavy that people focus too much on work, they don’t have time to relax, many people bring the work issues to home, keeping busy all
the time. We should find the balance between work and family life, try to enjoy life.
Last Sunday I went to the city of Wuxi. When I entered a tailor's shop, I found there were lots of people because there was a fashion show①.Suddenly I noticed that a middle-aged foreigner was gesticulating② to a saleswoman and pointing to a new shirt. It was clear that he wanted to buy the shirt, but he did not know the price, for he did not know Chinese. And the saleswoman did not know English. Though she wrote the price on the paper, he was still puzzled.
When I saw this, I went up to them. I asked the saleswoman the price of the shirt first and then I said to the foreigner in English, “One hundred and forty-eight yuan.” Hearing this he said to me, “Oh, thank you! But it's too expensive. Would you please ask her if she can make it cheaper? If she can , I will buy ten.” I told her what he said , and she agreed. In the end the foreigner paid 1,200 yuan for ten shirts.
Before he left, he gave me a nice pen. I thanked him and said to him , “Welcome to our city . Good-bye!”

On Pursuing Fashion
Nowadays, more and more undergraduates are pursuing fashion. Some of them even cut down the expenditure on books and meals to satisfy their desire for fashionable items.
The blind following of fashion has had a great influence on college students. First of all, the pursuit of fashion has made many college students get lost. Some of them even fail to focus on their study. Secondly, it is a costly hobby to follow the tide, which will impose great financial burden on their parents.
As far as I am concerned, college students should cherish ambitions rather than become slaves of fashion. As for them, the main task on campus is not to pursue fashion but to study. All in all, undergraduates should adopt a more reasonable attitude towards the pursuit of fashion.

although henry fords name is closely associated with the concept of mass production, he should receive equal credit for introducing labor practices as early as 1913 that would be considered advanced even by todays standards. safety measures were improved, and the work day was reduced to eight hours, compared with the ten-or twelve-hour day common at the time. in order to accommodate the shorter work day, the entire factory was converted from two to three shifts.
in addition, sick leaves as well as improved medical care for those injured on the job were instituted. the ford motor company was one of the first factories to develop a technical school to train specialized skilled laborers and an english language school for immigrants. some efforts were even made to hire the handicapped and provide jobs for former convicts.
the most widely acclaimed innovation was the five-dollar-a-day minimum wage that was offered in order to recruit and retain the best mechanics and to discourage the growth of labor unions. ford eplained the new wage policy in terms of efficiency and profit sharing. he also mentioned the fact that his employees would be able to purchase the automobiles that they produced - in effect creating a market for the product. in order to qualify for the minimum wage, an employee had to establish a decent home and demonstrate good personal habits, including sobriety, thriftiness, industriousness, and dependability. although some criticism was directed at ford for involving himself too much in the personal lives of his employees, there can be no doubt that, at a time when immigrants were being taken advantage of in frightful ways, henry ford was helping many people to establish themselves in america.
