Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her sitting by her window each afternoon, lying or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my room, including washing the window on the inside.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was seen clearly. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been complaining about her dirty window, but all time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and complained to others about something through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge(評(píng)判)someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window”
Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world more clearly.

Robots(機(jī)器人)
If someone asked you to draw a picture of a robot, how would it look Look big Look like a person Like a ball Or like a … That’s how we often picture robots in our minds. But real robots look many different ways.
Some robots have TV cameras for eyes. Some have special cells(電池)that help them touch. Many have computer brains. How robots look depends on (取決于)the job they have to do. Some can even have their parts changed so they can do different jobs.
Some robots look like huge creatures. NASA sent Viking Landers to Mars in 1976. They moved around on Mars, picked up soil(土壤)and did experiments. They helped people have known more about Mars.
Robots can do many things. They are taking the place of many workers. They can do boring jobs. They can do dangerous jobs, too. They can do messy jobs, such as cleaning, painting and so on. They can do jobs no person could do, such as picking up very hot metal, exploring. Some robots can even talk to people.
Robots don’t get bored. They don’t get tired. They don’t mind getting messy. They can work for the time people want.
Some people are afraid robots will take jobs away from people. But that doesn’t have to happen. After all, robots just do what people ask them to do. People must remember that robots are good at some things and humans are good at others.

Have you ever crossed the road to avoid talking to someone you meet Would love to go to a party and talk confidently(自信地) to every guest And are you nervous about the idea of being at a new environment in another country Don’t worry—we can help you!
You needn’t worry if you have good communication skills. And they are easy to learn. Here are a few ideas to help you.
◆ Learn how to do small talk
Small talk is very important and prepares for more serious conversations. Be prepared! Have some conversation openers ready. For example:
Think of a news story—not too serious, e. g. a story about a film or a sports star.
Think of “safe” things you can ask people their ideas about music, sports, films, etc.
Think of topics(話題)that you would avoid if you were talking to strangers—and avoid talking about them! That way, you don’t lose your confidence!
Train your listening skills
Listening is a skill which most people don’t have, but communication is a two-way process—speaking and listening. Always remember—it is not polite if you talk too much. Here are some ideas to make you a better listener:
Do …
show that you are listening by using encouraging noises or something like smiling, nodding, saying “uh—huh” and “OK”, etc.
keep good eye contact(接觸)
ask for more information to show your interest
Don’t…
look at your watch or mobile phone
look away from the person who is talking to you
change the subject
finish other people’s sentences for them
Always remember: Talk to a man about himself and he will speak to you for hours!
◆ Learn the rules
If you go to a new environment in another country, remember that rules can be different. In some countries, for example, you have to arrive on time at a party; in other countries, you don’t need to. In most places, you don’t have to take a gift to a party—but find out first!

Lisa, 8 years old, used to argue with her mom about everything. One day, after an hour of arguing, Lisa said, “Mom, you never let me make decisions. You always decide what we are going to eat or where we are going. Why can’t you let me make decisions”
Thinking for a moment, her mom said, “Lisa, you can decide what you are going to eat for tomorrows breakfast. I’ll cook whatever you want, but you have to eat up(吃光)whatever you ask for.” A big smile spread across Lisa’s face. “Okay. I’d like bacon, sausages, toast, eggs and chocolate milk.”

Happy that Lisa had learned her lesson, her mom replied, “You can decide what to eat once a week, but don’ t ask for too much, all right”

Knowing why you are reading---what you are reading to find out---will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.
Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are instructions for making or doing something, solving math problems, and science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important idea.
Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and news from local newspapers, which tell what was happening to friends and neighbors.

We’ve come a long way from blackboards and chalk. Modern technology (技術(shù)) has provided us with lots of ways we can make learning more interesting. Perhaps most importantly of all, it’s also more interactive (互動(dòng)).
Some kinds of tools have been developed. They make the 21st century learning experience much more interactive and interesting. Attracting the attention of students is always difficult, but these tools have made a big difference in how pupils learn.
For example, an interactive whiteboard is different from a traditional chalkboard. It allows the teachers to show images and provide sounds as well. If you imagine a large computer screen with colorful images and sounds added in, you can see why so many pupils are drawn in by what they see and hear in a modern classroom.
Various audio (聲音的) tools also help to make sure that everyone can hear what the teacher has to say. In the past, if a teacher said something that a child missed, perhaps the child was too timid (膽小的) or nervous to ask them to repeat it. Now they are less likely to miss out simply because they’re sitting too far away from the teacher to hear them.
The 21st century classroom is able to teach pupils more than one thing. For example, imagine a history lesson is given in a modern classroom. How is it different from a classroom setting in the past The answer is simple. The students will not only learn about history itself, they will also learn how to use the modern equipment (設(shè)備) that helps the teacher get their messages across.
Modern technology can make teaching and learning easier. Student response (應(yīng)答) system makes everyone able to express their opinions or answers without having to speak up. Since everyone can do it, the teacher can see who needs more help in other ways.
It’s clear that this kind of classroom technology is making a great difference in modern classrooms.

C. is the same as traditional chalkboard
D. is a computer screen with only black and white images
3.How can the various audio tools help in learning
A. It makes sure that everyone is less likely to miss what the teachers say.
B. It makes the timid students brave enough to ask teachers to repeat what they say.
C. It helps teachers to speak as much as they can.
D. It can only repeat what the teachers say.
4.What can you imagine a modern classroom different from the one setting the past
A. Students can learn all subjects with modern technology except History.
B. Teachers don’t have to be in the class.
C. Students can express their ideas more freely.
D. Teachers have to ask students who needs more help one by one.
5.In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “making a great difference” means “______”.

Have you ever been to Singapore For many Chinese tourists, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderful place to take a holiday. Maybe you fear that you won’t be able to find anything you want to eat in a foreign country. In Singapore, however, you’ll find a lot of Chinese food. It’s easy for you to find rice, noodles, or dumplings. If you’re feeling very brave, Singapore is an excellent place to try new food.
