The Little Prince Visits the Conceited Man
小王子拜訪愛(ài)慕虛榮的人
The second planet was inhabited by a conceited man.
第二顆行星上住著一個(gè)愛(ài)慕虛榮的人。
“Ah! Ah! I am about to receive a visit from an admirer!” he exclaimed from afar, when he first saw the little prince coming.
“啊!啊!我馬上要接待一位仰慕者的拜訪了! ”這個(gè)自命不凡的人一看到小王子朝他走來(lái)，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地就叫起來(lái)。
For, to conceited men, all other men are admirers.
在一個(gè)虛榮自負(fù)的人眼里，其他所有人都成了他的崇拜者。
“Good morning，” said the little prince. “That is a queer hat you are wearing.”
“早上好! ”小王子說(shuō)，“你戴的帽子很奇怪。”
“It is a hat for salutes，” the conceited man replied. “It is to raise in salute when people acclaimme. Unfortunately, nobody at all ever passes this way.”
“這是為了向人們致意用的。”愛(ài)慕虛榮的人回答道，“當(dāng)人們?yōu)槲液炔蕰r(shí)，我就拿起帽子向他們致意。不幸的是，從來(lái)沒(méi)有一個(gè)人從這里經(jīng)過(guò)。”
“Yes?” said the little prince, who did not understand what the conceited man was talking about.
“是嗎? ”小王子說(shuō)，他不太明白這個(gè)人在說(shuō)些什么。
“Clap your hands, one against the other,” the conceited man now directed him.
“拍拍你的手，用一只手去拍另一只。”愛(ài)慕虛榮的人開(kāi)始指導(dǎo)他。
The little prince clapped his hands. The conceited man raised his hat in a modest salute.
小王子就拍起巴掌來(lái)，那人便舉起他的帽子，謙虛地行禮。
“This is more entertaining than the visit to the king，”the little prince said to himself. And he began again to clap his hands, one against the other. The conceited man again raised his hat insalute.
“這比拜訪國(guó)王有意思多了。”小王子自言自語(yǔ)地說(shuō)。之后他又開(kāi)始拍手，用一 只手拍打另一只。愛(ài)慕虛榮的人再次向他脫帽回禮。
After five minutes of this exercise the little prince grew tired of the game’s monotony.
小王子這樣做了五分鐘’之后對(duì)這種單調(diào)乏味的把戲有點(diǎn)厭煩了。
“And what should one do to make the hat come down?” he asked.
“要讓你的帽子掉下來(lái)，該怎么做呢? ”他問(wèn)道。
But the conceited man did not hear him. Conceited people never hear anything but praise.
可這回那個(gè)虛榮自負(fù)的人聽(tīng)不進(jìn)他的話。因?yàn)榉彩菒?ài)慕虛榮的人只聽(tīng)得到贊美 之辭。
“Do you really admire me very much?” he demanded of the little prince.
“你真的非常崇拜我嗎? ”他問(wèn)小王子。
“What does that mean—‘admire’?”
“你說(shuō)的‘崇拜’是什么意思? ”
“To admire mean that you regard me as the handsomest, the best-dressed, the richest, and the most intelligent man on this planet.”
“崇拜就是說(shuō)你認(rèn)為我是這個(gè)星球上最帥氣、著裝最美、最富有、最智慧的 人。”
“But you are the only man on your planet!”
“但你是你的星球上唯一的人呀! ”
“Do me this kindness. Admire me just the same.”
“行行好吧，請(qǐng)你還是一樣地崇拜我吧! ”
“I admire you，” said the little prince, shrugging his shoulders slightly, “but what is there in that to interest you so much?”
“我崇拜你。”小王子輕輕地聳聳肩，說(shuō)道，“但是為什么這讓你如此感興趣 呢? ”
And the little prince went away.
于是小王子走開(kāi)了。
“The grown-ups are certainly very odd，”he said to himself, as he continued on his journey.
“這些大人真的非常古怪。”他對(duì)自己說(shuō)，又開(kāi)始繼續(xù)他的旅行。
