New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horseback. The New York police have 170 horses working in certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed, but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horseshoes. In fact, the y need more than 8,000 of them each year. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keepin g these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths. There are only about thirty-five of these blacksmiths in the whole United States.

The cost of shoeing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars, and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job.

A blacksmiths job is not an easy one. He must b e able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit it to the horses foot. The blacksmith must bend over all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight of the horses leg while he works. Clearly, a blacksmith must be very strong. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses— —for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift its leg.

One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948. He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city. Corbin became interested in blacksmithing because his father did it, and,as the puts it, “It’s a good way to make a living.”

Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(裝置) which uses satellites (衛(wèi)星) to find the user’s position(位置). It can find your position to within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, p lanes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, pla ne, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates(計算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精確的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧馬場). The last time I was there he told me his story.

When he was young, his family is too poor to have a house to live in. One day when he was in a high school, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of owning a horse ranch. He also drew a picture to show a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a beautiful farm. The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F. Roberts asked, “Why did I receive an F?” His teacher said, “This is an unrealistic (不現(xiàn)實(shí)的) dream for a young boy like you. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money.” Then the teacher added, “ If you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider (重新考慮) your grade.”

The boy went home and thought about it for a long and hard time. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to change your own mind on this.” Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy handed in the same paper, making no changes at all. He told his teacher “You can keep the F and I still keep my dream.”

Monty said a lot of kids’ dreams can be stolen. Don’t let anyone steal your dream. Follow your heart, no matter what others think. Have enough gumption (毅力) till your dream comes true.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her sitting by her window each afternoon, lying or reading.

After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”

One bright morning I decided to clean my room, including washing the window on the inside.

Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was seen clearly. Her window was clean!

Then it dawned on me. I had been complaining about her dirty window, but all time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.

That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and complained to others about something through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings

Since then, whenever I wanted to judge(評判)someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window”

Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world more clearly.

You needn’t worry if you have good communication skills. And they are easy to learn. Here are a few ideas to help you.

Small talk is very important and prepares for more serious conversations. Be prepared! Have some conversation openers ready. For example:

Think of “safe” things you can ask people their ideas about music, sports, films, etc.

Think of topics(話題)that you would avoid if you were talking to strangers—and avoid talking about them! That way, you don’t lose your confidence!

  Train your listening skills

Listening is a skill which most people don’t have, but communication is a two-way process—speaking and listening. Always remember—it is not polite if you talk too much. Here are some ideas to make you a better listener:

  keep good eye contact(接觸)

  Don’t…

look at your watch or mobile phone

look away from the person who is talking to you

  change the subject

finish other people’s sentences for them

Always remember: Talk to a man about himself and he will speak to you for hours!

  ◆ Learn the rules

If you go to a new environment in another country, remember that rules can be different. In some countries, for example, you have to arrive on time at a party; in other countries, you don’t need to. In most places, you don’t have to take a gift to a party—but find out first!

In the 13th century(世紀(jì)), the famous Italian traveler, Marco Polo, traveled a long way to China. During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things was paper money. People in the West didn’t use the paper money until the 15th century. However, the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.

Paper was invented(發(fā)明)by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2, 000 years ago. But it was not made in the West until the year 1100. Four hundred years later, a German found that he could make the best paper from trees. After that countries with plenty of forest, such as Canada, Sweden, America and Finland, became the most important ones in paper making.

Paper can be used in many ways. It can be used in newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated(使絕緣)from heat or cold with paper.

However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting down nearly 48,000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.

So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.

In short, we should keep a balance(平衡)between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

1.When did the Chinese begin to use paper money?

  A. In the 5th century.B. In the 6th century.

  C. In the 7th centuryD. In the 15th century.

2.Why did Canada become an important country in paper making?

  A. Because it was a large country.B. Because it had lots of forests.

  C. Because it was a very rich country.D. Because the inventor was from Canada.

3.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

  A. To explain how to make paper.B. To introduce where paper is from.

  C. To show Marco Polo’s great travel.D. To encourage people to save paper.

Language students often think they have a memory problem. They worry because they can’t remember vocabulary. They think something is wrong with their brain. In fact, the problem is not their brain or their memory. The problem is the way they study.

If you want to improve your memory, it’s important to understand how it works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. All information goes into your short-term memory first. But it can stay there for just a few minutes. In order to remember something for more than a few minutes, it must move into your long-term memory.

Only some things move into your long-term memory. Which things? This is an important question for a student. In fact, your long-term memory keeps things that are interesting or important to you. That’s why you remember big events in your life or your favorite sports events. Your long-term memory keeps other things, too. It holds onto things that you have thought about and worked with. So if you want to remember words, you have to work with them in some ways.

Many students study vocabulary by repeating(背誦)the words. This may be enough to remember them for a while. But after a day or a week, you may have lost them. The reason for this is very simple. Long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it is organized. When you put away a book - or a memory - you can’t just leave it everywhere. If you want to find it again, you have to put it in a certain place.

Repeating a new word doesn’t help you remember it for long, because it doesn’t give you any way to find it again. You need to make a place for the word in your long-term memory. There are many ways you can do this. You can write sentences with the word. Or you can make a very short story about it. You can also make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height(高度), you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his height.

All of these activities are ways to work with words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give you a way to find a word when you read it.

1.What can we learn about memory according to the passage?

  A. Things that are important only stay in short-term memory.

  B. Things we see usually goes into long-term memory first.

  C. We’ll forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.

  D. We’ll never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.

2.What does the word “organized” in Paragraph 4 mean?

  A. put in orderB. worked together

  C. found difficultD. left somewhere.

3.This passage is mainly about ________.

  A. why we often forget wordsB. what is wrong with our brain

  C. what our long-term memory doesD. how we can improve our memory

  四、回答問題

Different countries have different cultures(文化). Do you want to know more cultures about other countries? Here are some messages you may be interested in.

Taking off your shoes or not

It’s bad manners(舉止)to take off your shoes at the door of a London dinner party. But in Asia you should take off your shoes before going into a home, or people will think you are not polite enough.

What you should do instead: If you see a row of shoes at the door, take off your shoes. If not keep the shoes on.

  Talking over dinner

In some countries, like Japan, don’t start talking while everyone else is having dinner. You’ll meet with silence - not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtime is for eating, not for talking. Also don’t talk loudly in public places like museums, restaurants in Europe.

What you should do instead: Keep quiet when having dinner! Speak in a low voice in public places.

Knowing your right from your left

Some cultures in Africa and the Middle East still like to eat in traditional(傳統(tǒng)的)ways - using their hands. When people eat in this way, food is often offered for several people to share at the same time. That is why it’s important to wash your hands before eating. While eating, you have to follow the rule: Eat using your right hand, and use your left hand to do other things. Another rule to remember: Eat the food that’s closest to you. Don’t put your hand into the center of the table.

What you should do instead: Follow the others and use your right hand. Even children who are left-handed in this culture are taught to eat with their right hands. If you really can’t, explain yourself to others before you eat.

1.Do different countries have different cultures?

2.What should you do before going into a home in Asia?

3.Why do Japanese people keep silent while eating?

4.How many rules should you remember while eating in Africa?

5.What does the passage mainly talk about?

Peter and Tim are green people. They plant trees every day and the number of their trees is more than 10,000.

The two men live in a poor small village. Peter is blind for there is something wrong with his eyes and Tim lost his two arms in an accident when he was only three years old. In 2016, the two decided to work together since both of them had no jobs because of their physical condition. They wanted to find a way to make money. So they decided to plant trees. They hoped to make money by selling trees.

You could imagine how much difficulties they would meet when they planted trees. As they didn’t have enough money to buy young trees to plant, they had to use branches (樹枝) from big trees. Peter climbed on Tim’s shoulders to get the fine branch. After that, Peter dug a hole and planted it with care. Finally, Tim watered the branch.

Reading is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons.

First, reading is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. You will never feel bored or tired.

Next, you can read a book almost anywhere---in a car, on a plane, or even in the bathroom. All you need is a book!

Another good reason for reading is that it is useful. If you read as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. And you will read faster and find it easier to understand what you read. As your reading skills improve, you will probably find your schoolwork becomes much better.

Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You can read on computers, and the better you read, the better your computer skills will be.

Good readers may become writers too. They always have more things to write about.

If you wish to become a good reader, here are four important points to remember about speed of reading:

Knowing why you are reading---what you are reading to find out---will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly.

Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are instructions for making or doing something, solving math problems, and science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important idea.

Some things should be read quickly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and news from local newspapers, which tell what was happening to friends and neighbors.

In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow or from slow to fast as you go along. You need to read certain pages quickly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.

  1.You can read a book ________.

We’ve come a long way from blackboards and chalk. Modern technology (技術(shù)) has provided us with lots of ways we can make learning more interesting. Perhaps most importantly of all, it’s also more interactive (互動).

Some kinds of tools have been developed. They make the 21st century learning experience much more interactive and interesting. Attracting the attention of students is always difficult, but these tools have made a big difference in how pupils learn.

For example, an interactive whiteboard is different from a traditional chalkboard. It allows the teachers to show images and provide sounds as well. If you imagine a large computer screen with colorful images and sounds added in, you can see why so many pupils are drawn in by what they see and hear in a modern classroom.

Various audio (聲音的) tools also help to make sure that everyone can hear what the teacher has to say. In the past, if a teacher said something that a child missed, perhaps the child was too timid (膽小的) or nervous to ask them to repeat it. Now they are less likely to miss out simply because they’re sitting too far away from the teacher to hear them.

The 21st century classroom is able to teach pupils more than one thing. For example, imagine a history lesson is given in a modern classroom. How is it different from a classroom setting in the past The answer is simple. The students will not only learn about history itself, they will also learn how to use the modern equipment (設(shè)備) that helps the teacher get their messages across.

Modern technology can make teaching and learning easier. Student response (應(yīng)答) system makes everyone able to express their opinions or answers without having to speak up. Since everyone can do it, the teacher can see who needs more help in other ways.

It’s clear that this kind of classroom technology is making a great difference in modern classrooms.

  1.Modern technology ______ .

  A. is less interactiveB. makes learning more boring

  C. only uses blackboards and chalkD. provides us with many better learning ways

  2.The interactive whiteboard ________ .

  A. allows the teachers to show images and sounds as well

  B. can’t attract pupils’ attention in the class

  C. is the same as traditional chalkboard

  D. is a computer screen with only black and white images

3.How can the various audio tools help in learning

  A. It makes sure that everyone is less likely to miss what the teachers say.

  B. It makes the timid students brave enough to ask teachers to repeat what they say.

  C. It helps teachers to speak as much as they can.

  D. It can only repeat what the teachers say.

4.What can you imagine a modern classroom different from the one setting the past

  A. Students can learn all subjects with modern technology except History.

  B. Teachers don’t have to be in the class.

  C. Students can express their ideas more freely.

  D. Teachers have to ask students who needs more help one by one.

5.In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “making a great difference” means “______”.

  A. making a different thing

  B. playing an important role

  C. not being a same thing

Have you ever been to Singapore For many Chinese tourists, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderful place to take a holiday. On the one hand, more than seventy-five percent of population are of Chinese descent, so you can simply speak Putonghua a lot of time. On the other hand, Singapore is an English-speaking country.

Maybe you fear that you won’t be able to find anything you want to eat in a foreign country. In Singapore, however, you’ll find a lot of Chinese food. It’s easy for you to find rice, noodles, or dumplings. If you’re feeling very brave, Singapore is an excellent place to try new food. Whether you like Indian food, Western food, or Japanese food, you’ll find them all in Singapore.

One great thing about Singapore is that the temperature is almost the same all year round t seldom drops below 20℃. It’s warm and wet the whole year This is because it is so close to the equator. So you can choose to go whenever you like—spring, summer, autumn or winter! And, of course, it’s not too far from China. For those who enjoy the sun and the beach, Singapore is an ideal place.

On the northeast coast of Singapore, Changi Village is far from the noise of central Singapore. The buildings are modern, but there’s still a village terminal (晚期的) atmosphere. There’s a small, attractive seaside camp site across the Changi Creek from the bus terminal, where you can watch the planes gliding into Changi airport while relaxing on the sand.

Most large cities have zoos, but have you ever been to a zoo at night Singapore has a night zoo called the “Night Safari”. It might seem strange to go to a zoo when it’s dark. But if you’ve ever been to a zoo during the daytime, you might understand why Night Safari is so special. A lot of animals only wake up at night, so this is the best time to watch them. At the Night Safari, you can watch these animals in more natural environment than a normal zoo.

  三、閱讀單選

Anger is a kind of feeling. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get really angry.

Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit(打) someone, but sometimes, you hide(隱藏) your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.

In fact, its not good to hide your anger, and its normal for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.

When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. Its helpful to talk about your anger with an adult, such as parents, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away.
