惠特曼（1819-1892），生于紐約長(zhǎng)島，曾任教員、排字工人、記者等職。1855年出版詩(shī)集《草葉集》（Leaves of Grass），最初未獲好評(píng)。詩(shī)人自1856至1891年間不斷將《草葉集》修改增訂。
O Captain!My Captain!Our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather‘d every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart!heart!heart! O the bleeding drops of red! Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain!rise up and hear the bells; Rise up -for you the flag is flung -for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths-for you the shores crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turing; Here, Captain!dear father! This arm beneath your head; It is some dream that on the deck You ‘ve fallen cold and dead. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, My father does not feel my arm , he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; Exult, O shores!and ring, O bells! 我的船長(zhǎng)不作聲，嘴唇慘白，毫不動(dòng)彈；我的父親沒(méi)感到我的手臂，沒(méi)有脈搏，沒(méi)有遺言；船舶拋錨停下，平安抵達(dá)；船程終了；歷經(jīng)難險(xiǎn)返航，奪得勝利目標(biāo)。
