US newspaper companies are planning to import newsprint from China in an effort to contain one of their biggest and fastest-growing costs.
Gannett, Tribune and the New York Times Company have all begun experimenting with Chinese paper in recent months, and expect to use more of it in the months ahead.
“Although it’s kind of a trickle right now, it’s going to come in large volumes next year,” said Chris Cook, deputy editor of Pulp & Paper Week, a publication that covers the paper industry.
The embrace of Chinese suppliers comes as news-papers are under pressure on a variety of fronts, including competition for readers and advertisers from the internet. The latest circulation figures, released yesterday, revealed more grim news – particularly for big-city papers. For the six-month period ending in September, the Los Angeles Times’ daily circulation fell 8 per cent to 775,766. The paper is Tribune’s largest, and its performance could hinder the company’s efforts to arrange a possible sale or break-up of its newspaper holdings.
Under pressure from frustrated shareholders, Tribune has been mulling strategic options, and last week received indications of interest from a group of private equity firms.
Other big-city papers also suffered, with the Miami Herald’s daily circulation falling nearly 9 per cent to 265,583, and the Boston Globe slipping nearly 7 per cent to 386,415.
Against that backdrop, the Newspaper Association of America, an industry trade group, said a record 58m people visited newspaper websites in September.
